Job Description

About Joywell Foods

Joywell Foods’ mission is to help people eat better & live better - while still loving their favorite foods.

From 1988 to 2016, US morbid obesity grew from 23% to 40%. The prevalence of sugar in the American food landscape has resulted in more than 100M pre-diabetics/diabetics.  Sugar, in all its forms, is among the chief culprits.  Joywell is a food technology & consumer goods company that is focused on solving that problem by unlocking the power of plant-based, sweet proteins in our favorite foods.  The result?  Far fewer calories, protein-based digestion with no glycolic affect or health unknowns & still, the same great tastes we all love!

Founded by an amazing scientist out of Cal Berkeley, 7-years of R&D under our belts on the cusp of commercialization & backed by top-tier Silicon Valley investor Khosla Ventures & food-industry investor Evolv Ventures — Joywell is primed for success.  Come join us help consumers have their cake & eat it too.

We are searching for a hands-on Process Engineer to join our Fermentation team to develop the next-generation, nutritious sweeteners that will transform food and human health. This role will focus on strain validation, bench-scale fermentation, scale-up, and production of our fermentation-based naturally sweet proteins. The ideal candidate will have a background in microbial fermentation and a strong fundamental knowledge of functional proteins. This position will report to the Director of Biology.

  • Work with and improve data capture systems to store data and metadata about the experiments. Manage process controls and track process variations.
  • Analyze, interpret, and report fermentation data using data analysis tools (eg. JMP etc.) to inform strain screening/validation and to guide process improvements.
  • Troubleshoot experimental, operational, and equipment issues and implement solutions
  • Scale up process improvements from lab to pilot and manufacturing scales. Develop process flow diagrams.
  • Document and share findings through maintenance of scientific notebook, technical reports, oral presentations, and project updates; actively review scientific literature
  • Support fermentation operations including media preparation, bioreactor setup, equipment cleaning and sterilization, instrument calibration, sampling, and metabolite measurements.
  • Develop, maintain, and follow standard operating procedures (SOP’s)
  • Collaborate with Strain Engineering, Downstream Processing, Analytical Sciences, and Product Development teams on strain validation, process development / optimization, analytical characterization, sensory evaluation, and regulatory approval

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or related field with 0-3 years of relevant industry experience, or a Master’s degree in chemical engineering or related field with relevant experience
  • Experience with microbial fermentation; familiarity with bioreactor equipment, instrumentation, and control systems
  • Experience in experiment design (DOE) and statistical analysis of technical data is preferred.
  • Ability to write data analysis and process scripts (Python, R, etc.) is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; outstanding written and verbal communication
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the dynamic needs of a startup environment
