Job Description

About Joywell Foods

Joywell Foods’ mission is to help people eat better & live better - while still loving their favorite foods.

From 1988 to 2016, US morbid obesity grew from 23% to 40%. The prevalence of sugar in the American food landscape has resulted in more than 100M pre-diabetics/diabetics.  Sugar, in all its forms, is among the chief culprits.  Joywell is a food technology & consumer goods company that is focused on solving that problem by unlocking the power of plant-based, sweet proteins in our favorite foods.  The result?  Far fewer calories, protein-based digestion with no glycolic affect or health unknowns & still, the same great tastes we all love!

Founded by an amazing scientist out of Cal Berkeley, 7-years of R&D under our belts on the cusp of commercialization & backed by top-tier Silicon Valley investor Khosla Ventures & food-industry investor Evolv Ventures — Joywell is primed for success.  Come join us help consumers have their cake & eat it too.

Joywell Foods is searching for a hands-on Scientist to join our Analytical Sciences team. This role is focused on establishing mass spectrometry capabilities to support core research and development, scale-up, and commercialization of our plant- and fermentation-based sweet proteins and food products. The ideal candidate will have a background in analytical sciences, with demonstrated expertise in characterization of proteins by mass spectrometry, and  fundamental knowledge of functional proteins.

  • Characterize proteins by mass spectrometry, including intact-mass analysis, peptide mapping, and proteomics
  • Organize, document, and present data on a regular basis and maintain the performance of mass spec instrumentation
  • Expand lab capabilities through the development of additional biophysical techniques to define and characterize critical quality attributes of protein-based sweeteners
  • Train, mentor, and coach junior team members

  • Sc. or Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, or biological sciences with 5+ years of relevant industrial experience
  • Expertise in analytical method development with emphasis on HPLC and LCMS supporting protein identification, characterization, and quantification
  • Previous experience with intact mass, peptide mapping, and/or proteomics
  • Fundamental and applied knowledge of functional proteins
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and problem solving skills; outstanding written and verbal communication
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the dynamic needs of a startup environment
